A dull cutter or a clogged brush is the number-one cause of keys that stick, bind or simply don’t work. Looking after these two parts keeps every key you cut accurate.
When to change a cutter
Burrs on the cut edge, a rougher sound while cutting, or keys that need filing to work are all signs your cutter is worn. Carbide cutters outlast HSS several times over and are worth it if you cut daily.
Why the brush matters
The de-burring brush removes the fine metal shavings left after cutting. A worn or gummed-up brush leaves burrs that make a freshly cut key feel wrong in the lock. Brushes are cheap — replace them before they fail.
Match parts to your machine
Cutters and brushes are machine-specific (a W288E cutter is not a 100-series cutter). Check your model before ordering.
