Restricted & Mailbox Key Policy

Last updated: October 31, 2026

Some keys can only be sold to the right person. This policy explains which keys need proof, what proof we accept, and what we will not sell. It protects building owners, residents and the public. We may refuse or cancel any order under this policy and give a full refund.

Keys that need proof of ownership

Before we sell or cut any of these, we ask you to prove you are allowed to have them:

  • restricted or patented keyways (for example Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, ASSA, Abloy);
  • keys stamped “Do Not Duplicate”;
  • high-security keys;
  • mailbox and compartment keys;
  • condo, building or master-system keys.

We only sell restricted or patented blanks when we are an authorized dealer for that keyway.

Proof we accept

Usually we ask for photo ID that matches the order name, plus one of:

  • the key-control card or registered signature for that key system;
  • a lease, property-tax bill or similar showing you live at or own the address;
  • a letter from the property manager, condo board or landlord on letterhead.

For mailbox and compartment keys, we ask for a working spare key or the unit details, plus an address that matches your ID or a manager’s letter. Canada Post’s own guidance says a community-mailbox holder may have a spare key copied at a locksmith, so we are glad to help box holders.

For locksmiths and trade accounts, we set up a verified business account (business name, address and trade references) and unlock restricted items for that account.

How to send proof

When your order includes a restricted item, we hold it for review. We email you a secure link to upload your document. We verify, then either complete or refuse the order. We keep a short sale record (name, address, ID type, key type, date) and store your document as described in our Privacy Policy.

What we will not sell

To stay within the law, we do not sell or advertise:

  • automotive master keys, tryout keys or jiggler sets (these need a provincial licence we do not hold);
  • Canada Post master keys or “arrow” keys, or any key to a Canada Post high-security lock (these stay with Canada Post and are not for sale — we only sell individual compartment keys to the box holder);
  • any key when we have reason to believe it would be used to break in or to steal mail.

Our right to refuse

We may refuse or cancel any restricted-key order, with a full refund, if proof is missing, does not match, or raises a concern. We keep records of refusals.
