Key Blank vs Cut Key: What You’re Actually Buying

People often ask why a “key” and a “key blank” are priced differently. The answer is simple, and it helps you order the right thing.

A key blank is uncut

A blank is the raw key shaped to fit a particular lock brand and keyway, but with no cuts. It will slide into the right lock but won’t turn it until it is cut to a code or copied from a working key.

A cut key works

A cut key has been duplicated from your original or cut to the lock’s code, so it turns the lock. If you bring or send a working key, we match the blank and cut it.

Ordering online

Buying a blank online is right when you cut your own keys or need the correct profile. If you need a working copy, order the blank and have it cut, or visit the counter.

Not sure which blank fits your lock? Send us the code or a photo — call 437-345-7966 or browse all key blanks.
