If your key says “Do Not Duplicate” or carries a brand like Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Abloy or a condo/property management keyway, it may be a restricted or high-security key.
Restricted keyways
Restricted keys use blanks that are not sold on the open market. They are controlled by the manufacturer or the locksmith who holds the keyway, so copies can only be made with proper authorization. This is a deliberate security feature for condos, offices and master-keyed buildings.
High-security keys
High-security keys add physical protections — tighter tolerances, sidebars, moving elements or dimple cuts — that make them far harder to pick or duplicate on standard machines. They often combine restricted blanks with patented mechanisms.
“Do Not Duplicate” keys
A “Do Not Duplicate” stamp on an ordinary blank is a request, not a legal lock — but a reputable shop will ask about authorization. For genuine restricted systems, you will usually need to show you are on the authorized list before a copy is made.
